Universal Production Music Taps Jane Carter as President

Jane Carter has been tapped as Universal Production Music’s new president, effective immediately. In the position, the London-based Carter will oversee the company worldwide, leading strategy for the fast-growing sector of production music.

Reporting to Jody Gerson, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group (the parent entity of Universal Production Music), Carter’s appointment is historic. Just as Gerson became the first woman to become be named chairman of a global music company and CEO of a major publisher, Carter is also blazing a trail in the music business as the first woman to lead global production at a major music publisher.

Carter, who previously served the company as its U.K. managing director, has decades of experience in the world of production music. She has worked with a myriad of U.K.’s top film composers, including George Fenton, Michael Nyman, Max Richter, Craig Armstrong and Steven Price. While at the BBC, where she worked for more than seven years, she coordinated the Earth in Concert series with her client Fenton as well as two BBC Proms with the National Theatre and Aardman Animations. She held the title of general manager for BBC Worldwide Music Publishing, creative director for BBC Music and head of marketing for Warner Classics U.K.

Production music is an important but sometimes little understood area of the publishing business. At Universal Production Music, the team is responsible for building a library of musical works for use in audiovisual productions like film, television, advertising, broadcasts and other media, whether through commissioning composers or licensing. In an age where intellectual property is seen as an increasingly crucial part of a company, the production music division beefs up UMG’s already giant catalog by owning the master and composition copyrights for these works.
