Glenn Mendlinger Promoted to Exec VP at Republic, President at Imperial Music

Glenn Mendlinger has been elevated to executive vp of Republic Records and president of Imperial Music — the indie banner Republic launched last September under Mendlinger’s leadership — it was announced Monday (April 25).

With Mendlinger at the helm, Imperial claims it reached sales of 7 million adjusted albums and 10 billion global streams in 2021. Among its releases last year was Bo Burnham’s INSIDE (The Songs), which has spent 43 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Comedy Albums chart — and counting — and hit the top 10 on the Billboard 200 for six non-consecutive weeks. The album won the 2022 Grammy for best song written for visual media for the track “All Eyes On Me,” while INSIDE was also nominated for  best music film.

It’s not all laughs at Imperial, though. The label has notably enjoyed success in the K-pop realm, too. Last month, Stray Kids’ album ODDINARY debuted at No. 1  on the Billboard 200, while TWICE scored back-to-back top 10 debuts on the chart and TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s The Chaos Chapter: Freeze debuted in the top five. Also landing in the top five was G Herbo’s 25, while Baby Gravy (BBNO$ & Yung Gravy) drew over 300 million global streams with Baby Gravy 2, including the hits “shining on my ex” and “Welcome to Chilis.” Other Imperial projects include Jelani Aryeh, Chri$tian Gate$ and Brye.

The New York-based Mendlinger is also part of the executive leadership team at Republic, where he’s involved with The Chemical Brothers – who he brought to Republic when he joined the label in 2019 – as well as Swedish House Mafia, who released their first album in over 10 years last week.

“In a very short period of time, Imperial has achieved historic milestones under Glenn’s leadership,” said Republic co-founder Monte Lipman in a statement. “His tenacity and sense of urgency have yielded unprecedented results, capturing the imagination of the independent music community.”

Added co-founder Avery Lipman, “There’s no other company in the business like Imperial, because there’s no other leader like Glenn. When it comes to breaking ground, he never compromises. He isn’t afraid to follow an uncharted course, and his uncanny instincts for progression continue to serve Imperial incredibly well.”

In his own statement, Mendlinger said Monte and Avery “continue to inspire me to compete at the highest level for our artists every day. When we started this journey 18 months ago IMPERIAL was just an idea that now has sold over 7 million adjusted albums. Their leadership, strategic acumen, and adaptability along with their humility make them one of a kind executives and it is an honor to be part of Republic and this team.”

Prior to Republic and Imperial, Mendlinger spent 21 years at Astralwerks, where he served as general manager between 2006 and 2018. During his time there, he played a pivotal role in mainstreaming electronic music by overseeing campaigns for acts including The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, David Guetta and Swedish House Mafia. He was also a key force in the rise of Halsey, who he signed to the label in 2014, and worked with artists including Sia, Phoenix, deadmau5, Hot Chip, Empire of the Sun and AIR. He previously worked at East West and Virgin.
