Def Jam Promotes Lynn Gonzalez to EVP/Head of Business Affairs

Def Jam has promoted Lynn Gonzalez to the role of executive vp/head of business affairs and business development, the company announced today (April 29). In her role, she reports to both Def Jam chairman/CEO Tunji Balogun and Universal Music Group executive vp of business & legal affairs Steve Gawley.

Gonzalez has spent nine years at Def Jam, joining in 2013 as vp of business & legal affairs and, since 2016, serving as senior vp of business & legal affairs. Prior to Def Jam, she worked in legal roles at Razor & Tie Entertainment and then Atlantic Records, where she also was a founding member and then president of the Black Women In Entertainment Law Foundation, providing mentorship and scholarships to women of color in entertainment law.

“I am excited for the opportunity to help realize Tunji’s new vision for this next chapter in Def Jam’s historic legacy,” Gonzalez said in a statement about Balogun, who joined Def Jam in January. “Alongside an amazing executive team, I am thankful for the opportunity to learn and grow under Tunji’s guidance, and I am thankful to both he and Steve for believing in me.”

“Beyond her best-in-class skill set as an attorney and her remarkable business instincts and acumen, Lynn provides invaluable guidance and perspective on behalf of our artists and their plans,” Balogun said in a statement. “Her ability to handle the intricacies of her very sensitive and important work while adding keen insights and value across every aspect of our label makes Lynn a real one-of-one.”

Gonzalez will continue leading Def Jam’s legal team and overseeing negotiations and deals for its artists. In addition to her legal and business affairs roles, she is also a member of the policy committee for Universal Music’s Task Force for Meaningful Change.

“I was fortunate enough to hire Lynn Gonzalez for her exceptional legal talents,” Gawley said in a statement. “What I came to learn over time was that her talents as a dealmaker were only exceeded by her intuitive operational sensibilities. Lynn will be a critical force in enhancing Def Jam’s legacy and in helping its stellar management team reach ever greater heights under Tunji’s leadership.”
